Review & Updating Department Regulations for Treatment & Custody of Youth

  • Review & Updating Department Regulations for Treatment & Custody of YouthDoes your department have regulations for treatment of youth?
  • When were they last updated?
  • Are they in compliance with the Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Act of 2002?
  • Does the lack of regulation affect policing approaches?

If your department does not have updated regulations for the arrest, booking, interrogation and custody of youth one of the services of Strategies for Youth will help update your regulations to be consistent with:

  • Standard 44 regarding Juvenile Treatment & Custody issued by the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (2007 edition)
  • Standard 41 of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)

Department regulation review includes updating regulations according to state law for juveniles for issues including Miranda warnings for youth, interrogations of youth in custody, and changes in federal law.

Examples of Department Regulations Developed by Strategies for Youth:

  • The Cambridge Police Department had not updated its department regulations in several years and involved officers in the review of the regulations.  Their new departmental regulations are based on CALEA Standard 44 and led to changes in chain of command oversight on dealing with shoplifting and other crimes, as well as the development of a first time offender diversion program.
